The Mechanism of Kneeling Chairs
The kneeling chair enables a person to sit with his or her thighs being at about sixty to seventy degree angles. This is in the vertical direction. The normal chair does not help in bringing about this posture. The sitting angle would be ninety degrees. The shins support the body weight as required. However, the term kneeling chairs does not imply that the person sitting at the chair has to kneel on ground surface. Also, many people believe that the body weight is accommodated by the knees when you use this chair. However, this is not true. The weight is supported mostly by the shins and provides stability. The pressure on the buttocks and upper thighs is reduced. However, the body still maintains the sitting posture and does not kneel.
Now let us see what happens when we sit on the kneeling chairs. Open body angle would be created by reducing the lower body angle. And as a result, the spine would have proper alignment thereby enabling the user to have a comfortable sitting position. Sitting in this posture enables you to lean inward maintaining the body angle at the wider or ninety degrees position.

The conventional design of these kneeling chairs has changed to accommodate the requirements of the user and to enhance comfort while sitting. People had the belief that the knees bear the weight and as a result people with poor knees would not be able to enjoy the comfort of these chairs. The new design of these chairs is inclusive of an horizontal surface for sitting that includes the knee pad. However, this can be considered as a misconception.
The ultimate aim of kneeling chairs is to provide maximum comfort while sitting and are built by following the concept of the requirement of movements for the body. Our body would never benefit from sitting still as this is not the purpose for which it is built. The knees would get periodic relief through alterative extension and flexing.
The original chairs were created by Mr. Peter Opsvik and used rocker runners so that one leg could be used to rock chairs. The presently available designs have advanced much and are built according to the ergonomic ideas. Ergonomics helps people to have a comfortable posture and thereby increasing the productivity.
The quality of the product you select should be analysed well before purchasing one to get the maximum advantage of these chairs.
